Online Exam Proctoring with ProctorU

Scheduling Your ProctorU Exam

This certificate program uses ProctorU to monitor students taking online exams in order to ensure the integrity and quality of the exam process. Follow the steps below to schedule your exam:

Step 1: Create a ProctorU account and download the Guardian Secure Proctoring Browser.

Step 2: Schedule your exam at least 72 hours in advance.

  1. Login to your ProctorU account and click the “Schedule New Session” button.
  2. Confirm your institution, term, and exam name, then click “Search Sessions.”
  3. Use the calendar and clock features on the left to select your desired testing date and time.

Step 3: Prepare for exam day. This video will walk you through the exam day experience including any best practices.

Required Technical Equipment

All you need is a computer with a strong internet connection, a microphone, a web camera, and a cellphone or mirror (for initial workspace scan with your proctor). Laptops work, but you cannot use a tablet, Chromebook or mobile device. You will also need to have a valid government-issued photo ID. You’ll need to be in a well-lit, quiet area with a clear workspace and no one else can be in the room with you.

If you experience any technical issues during the start-up process, ProctorU technicians will work with you until the problem is resolved.

Applications and Websites Permitted During the Exam

The Program Certificate Exam is “open book,” which means you can view any website (including the Wharton Online and Wall Street Prep learning portal) and 3rd party applications such as Excel or a PDF viewer.

Exam Timing: 5 Hour Window

While the Program Certificate Exam is not a timed exam, you must complete the exam within 5 hours. If you have not completed the exam after 5 hours, you will be required to submit the exam as is and close out of the exam system. Your exam will be graded as is, and unanswered questions will be marked as “incorrect.”

Exam Day: Before Logging In

  1. Have a government-issued I.D. ready and be located in a private, well-lit room with no one else around you.
  2. Clear your workspace of all materials except those allowed by your instructor or testing organization.
  3. Close all third-party programs and unplug any secondary monitors. The exam must be taken using a single monitor. Please note that you will be able to re-launch 3rd party programs such as Excel after logging into the Guardian Browser.
  4. Make sure you have download the Guardian Browser. This is the secure/locked-down browser you will use to take the exam. If you are on a Mac and need help identifying which Mac download to use (Intel vs M1), view this support article.

Exam Day: How Do I Launch the Exam

Your proctor will guide you through this process, which will likely take less than 10 minutes unless you experience technical difficulties (be sure to download the Guardian Browser before test day to minimize the chance you’ll have technical issues), in which case we can assist you with fixing your equipment. This time is not subtracted from the time you’re allowed in your exam.

Review the process below to help familiarize yourself with what will happen on exam launch (The proctor will guide you through steps 2-9):

  1. Log in to your ProctorU account 2-3 minutes before your scheduled appointment and click Start Session when the countdown timer reaches 0:00:00.
  2. Pre-checks
If you don’t already have the Guardian Browser, you’ll be prompted to download it. The browser will prompt you to share your screen, a required part of being proctored online. You’ll be automatically guided through a series of equipment checks to make sure your system meets minimum requirements.
  3. Chatbox download
You will be prompted to download and run a LogMeIn Rescue applet file that will bring up a chat box allowing you to text with your proctor. If prompted, be sure to click “open” or “allow” to give the file permission to run. When the chat box says “waiting,” it means that you are in the queue waiting for your proctor. TIP: If your status shows “waiting,” do not re-download the applet file as that will put you back at the end of the queue. If you have issues with this applet file, view these troubleshooting tips.
  4. Photos & Authentication
You’ll take a photo of yourself as well as your I.D. for identity verification purposes.
  5. Proctor Connection & Confirmations
Your proctor will greet you and confirm that you passed your identity verification steps. You’ll review the exam rules with your proctor.
  6. Remote System Check
Your proctor may ask to take remote control of your mouse and keyboard via the LogMeIn Rescue applet to verify system setup and troubleshoot technical issues that may arise. You will be able to see everything that your proctor is doing during this step, and it is impossible for them to access any files without your knowledge.
  7. Camera Pan
Your proctor will ask you to show the 4 walls of your room as well as your desk space via your webcam. You may or may not be asked to show your computer monitor using a mirror or cellphone camera. After this step, your proctor will make sure your cell phone is out of reach.
  8. Navigating to the Exam & Password Entry
Your proctor will then direct you to the Wharton Online online platform and will unlock your exam.
  9. Take Your Exam
Your proctor will release control of your computer, and you’ll begin your exam when you’re ready.

NOTE: Your webcam view and your screen will be recorded throughout the duration of your exam.

Exam Day: Submitting Your Completed Exam

  1. Alert the proctor when finished BEFORE submitting: Prior to submitting your exam, let your proctor know through the chat box that you’re finished. They will oversee the submission process.
  2. Log out of your exam site and browser: After submitting your exam, your proctor must observe you log out of the exam website and close out of all browser tabs.
  3. Close out of ProctorU chat box: This will end your session with ProctorU. You’re done!
